Refrac In-Depth Series

In our ongoing series, we take a closer look at the economics of refracs in Haynesville, Bakken, Barnett, Eagle Ford, & Permian.

What Are Refracs?

Refracturing (or refrac) is an operation to restimulate a well after an initial period of production, the objective being to increase output from an existing well without new well start costs. Previously, the focus of hydraulic fracturing has been to optimize the components of the frac job, such as proppant type, amount of water, number of stages, etc. This continued as activity in the the Upstream industry shifted from gas to oil or liquids-rich, targeted drilling. The next wave is expected to focus on refracs.

Refracs in the Spotlight

The challenging commodity price environment has forced operators to seek out alternatives for higher returns amid dwindling capex spending. Refracs have moved into the spotlight as a viable option and have gained attention across the Upstream industry. Early results across several basins have been encouraging. Our Refrac In-Depth Series covers the economics of refracs in Haynesville, Bakken, Barnett, Eagle Ford, & Permian.
